“….the gladiolus liked being gladiolus and thought to be superior to almost every other flowers…But the flowers that the gladiolus truly loved, the ones that they admired above and beyond were the tulips…
At Winter, the gardener, while burying on the ground the fat bulbs of the tulips would say:
– At the city stores a dozen of tulips is worth a fortune.
But in the heart of the gladiolus flower a tulip was worth much more.
…the only regret in the life of a gladiolus was not being able to be a tulip.
Because tulips are expensive, rare and very well dressed. There personality is simple, exact and clear. Their colors are rich and sumptuous. Their petals are the most well cut and fitted petals in the entire garden…”

Madeira Flower Festival 2009/FX XXI em Festa

Although I have been several times in Holland it wasn’t there that the tulip fascinated me, it was in the sophisticated city of Japan.
The tulips stood out for their powerful color, beauty and elegance that decorated all avenues and squares.
What I wanted to do was to stay there, in those amazing places, every possible minute but I restrained myself and let the moments breathe, I took photographs, kept images and dreamed awake wishing for a day when I would be able to take to the streets of Funchal a project that shined and it was inspired on the tulips that I once met in Japan.
In 2009 I created the project “FX XXI in celebration” for the Madeira Flower Festival.

” It wasn’t a surprise to me. I knew that beyond the great planets – Earth, Jupiter, Mars or Venus, which were given a name – there are hundreds and hundreds of others, sometimes so small that you can barely see on the telescope. When the astronomer discovers one of them, he gives him for a name a number. He calls him for example: “asteroid 3251″.”
